We tested the Molicycle R1 in detail to offer you a complete analysis of its features, performance and comfort. Here’s our verdict.
Design and ergonomics
The Molicycle R1 features a modern and sleek design that could easily be mistaken for a higher-end bike. The fairly sturdy 6061 aluminum alloy frame seems to provide good durability. So we end up with a 25.7kg bike, a bit heavy for a city bike, but with a low entry frame, always appreciated by city cyclists.
The bike is equipped with slim 26 x 1.75 inch tires designed to provide good grip on various urban surfaces. They will also be sufficient for small trails, but unfortunately won’t do the job for large forest/mountain trails.
Note also the utility of the integrated luggage rack, a practical addition for cyclists who need to carry light loads, making this bike even more functional for everyday use, commuting to work.
Engine, battery and autonomy
The Molicycle R1 has a 250W motor capable of producing a maximum torque of 42N.M. Therefore, we reach the maximum speed of 25 km/h without worry, in accordance with the regulations. For speed lovers, it can be developed up to 32 km/h on private roads. And as a little bonus, the bike is also equipped with a throttle, which you can choose to install or not. Because we remember, of course, that this is not allowed on the road.
The 36 V 14.5 Ah (522 Wh) battery is good value for money for a bike in this range. It offers a maximum range of 110 km in lowest assist mode and between 50 and 60 km in continuous use of maximum assist.
As for charging time, we’re looking at 5 to 6 hours, which is standard for this type of battery, although it’s a bit longer than some high-end models.
It is invisibly integrated into the frame, which not only adds to the aesthetics of the bike, but also makes it easy to remove, allowing for safe charging at home and preventing theft (a key system locks the battery though). Also note that the weight of the battery is well distributed, so we have a bike that maintains a very good balance.
On the other hand, a negative point when removing the battery. The connectors are exposed face up and can therefore be damaged in the event of rain. During our test, knowing that we were parking the bike in the courtyard of a building (and that we were in Paris), several times we had to abandon the idea of recharging the battery for fear of damaging the connections due to the rain. Quite an annoying problem and therefore a variable to consider for users who don’t have a bike storage/parking space.
Driving and comfort
In terms of performance, the Molicycle R1 lives up to expectations. The 250W motor provides quick electric assistance, although acceleration can be a bit sharp on take off, sometimes making the bike difficult for less experienced riders to control. Ditto for each gear, then as soon as we get below a certain mileage, the engine takes over to give us momentum, an impulse that isn’t necessarily gentle compared to other higher-end models.
Therefore, there are several levels of assistance (from 1 to 5) that allow you to modulate the pedaling effort according to your needs and preferences.
For those who prefer an all-electric mode, the Molicycle R1 therefore offers an option with the trigger that you can install if you wish (remember, this is only legal on private roads, not on the road). And for the more sporty, of course, classic pedaling remains possible with the bike’s 7 classic speeds. This provides additional flexibility to adapt the driving mode depending on the road conditions and the distance to be covered.
The front suspension is equipped with a lockable shock absorber allowing the stiffness to be adjusted according to driving conditions. While this suspension is adequate for city riding, it can be upgraded for longer and more demanding short tours. The SR® SELLE ROYAL silicone seat, although comfortable for urban use, also lacks springs that are felt on trails with steep terrain.
However, the overall ergonomics of the bike allow for a comfortable riding position, which is essential for fairly long rides. Finally, the easy adjustment of the handlebars and saddle allows each cyclist to find the most optimal position for their body shape.
Safety and equipment
Safety is a crucial aspect of any electric bike and the Molicycle R1 does not disappoint in this regard. Front and rear Logan® hydraulic disc brakes provide excellent stopping power, enabling quick and safe stopping. Stopper brake levers also add an extra layer, ensuring the bike stops instantly when needed.
It has front and rear lights, providing good visibility in low light and at night. The ergonomic frame allows for a comfortable driving posture, necessary for long journeys. Every element of the bike, including the handlebars and saddle, can be adjusted to provide the most optimal riding position according to your size and preferences.
The 3.5-inch LCD screen mounted in the center of the handlebar makes it easy to view all the necessary information, such as speed, distance traveled and battery level. However, the screen looks a bit dated and we’d like it to get an update to offer a more modern aesthetic and additional features.
Installation and maintenance
Assembling the Molicycle R1 is very easy, allowing it to work quickly. There is a clear and concise instruction manual that easily guides us through the assembly steps. Once assembled, the bike technically requires little maintenance, except for the hydraulic brakes to ensure their effectiveness (but that’s standard for this type of braking system).
