European regulations evaded by big

Before the implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Law, the European Commission is trying to reach a consensus among the affected companies on this new regulation. Last week The Commission’s Office for Artificial Intelligence announced the signing of a pact signed by around a hundred companies. We find in the signatures Google, Adobe, Dassault Systèmes and even OVHCloud.

The signatories of this pact commit themselves to three aspects.

  • Implement an AI management strategy in their organization
  • Identify high-risk AI systems as defined by legislation
  • Promoting understanding of AI technologies among their employees

The commission mentions that around fifty signatories have also made additional commitments regarding the use of AI. This includes the obligation to implement human oversight of AI systems or even work to establish labeling of AI-generated content.

In fact, in most cases, it is a performance-oriented commitment certain future obligations under the European AI Act, but a little early.

No risk taking

Since the approach is purely voluntary, signatories are not risking much by signing this pact. This stipulates that companies participating in the initiative will publish a report on the implementation of the principles within one year.

And without the risk of a backlash if they forget. The purpose of this pact is to share different approaches to compliance.

Therefore, if the risk is minimal, the list of signatories shows that the main European and American AI players have chosen to abstain. OpenAI, Mistral or even ecosystem players like Hugging Face are missing. This suggests that not everyone is ready to comply with the obligations of the European text.

What is the deadline for implementation of the Law on OV?

The text of the AI Law came into force from August 2024.

But the main provisions of the text will be implemented only gradually, starting in 2025. Full implementation is planned for 2027.

From that date, companies found not to comply with the principles laid down in the regulation will this time face sanctions and fines.
