Windows 11 24H2 supports Wi-Fi 7, is your PC compatible?

Microsoft recently released Windows 11 Feature Update 2024, Windows 11 24H2. It introduces Wi-Fi 7 support for Arm-based PCs, including the new Copilot+ series PCs.

Windows 11 and Wi-Fi 7 support

Microsoft’s announcement includes some interesting details about support for this new wireless networking standard Wi-Fi 7. Currently, this upgrade to 24H2 is crucial for those who want to use this advancement, which should improve performance, coverage and security compared to previous Wi-Fi standards.

Indeed, Wi-Fi 7 introduces advanced features such as multi-link operation (MLO), allowing devices to take advantage of multiple frequency bands simultaneously, including 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and/or 6 GHz. This capability is an advantage for busy Wi-Fi environments, improving connection speed and stability.

To take advantage of Wi-Fi 7 under Windows 11 24/7, Microsoft recommends the following:

  • A router compatible with Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6/6E and/or WPA3.
  • The latest version of Windows 11, which can be checked through the Windows Update settings.

To check the compatibility of your hardware, you should consult its documentation or visit its manufacturer’s website. In Windows 11, to find out if your computer (network card) supports this version of Wi-Fi, just run the following command from the command line

netsh wlan show drivers

In addition to the supported types of wireless networks (802.11be for Wi-Fi 7 or 802.11ax for Wi-Fi 6/6e), it is possible to learn more about the authentication and encryption supported in infrastructure mode (WPA3 Personal and WPA3 Enterprise) .
