New VHF communication systems for airports

New VHF communication systems will be installed at airports and telecommunications stations, improving air navigation services.

Another important equipment upgrade with new VHF communication systems for aeronautical telecommunication stations and airports was signed a few days ago by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Christ Staikouras. Specifically, the contract was awarded for “VHF aeronautical radio transmitters” to provide communications services within the Athens FIR.

These are VHF aeronautical communication systems that will serve the control centers of the Athens Macedonia Region (KEPATHM) and air traffic control services (approach and control towers) at the airports. In addition, they will cover the expansion needs of the terminal area of Heraklion Airport, Amygdaleona Airport in the Kavala area and all CAA telecommunication stations in the territory.

The CAA Manager, Mr. Giorgos Sounatsos, emphasized that: “The order concerns equipment with new technology Voice-Over-Internet Protocol (VoIP), which is being introduced to the Service for the first time and will interface with the 18 new VCRS voice communication and recording systems at airports. The delivery will be contracted in the first quarter of 2025 and will significantly upgrade aeronautical communication services, covering our country’s commitments to the EU Implementing Regulation “Voice Channel Spacing 8.33kHz”.

The value of the commission amounts to €4.2 million and is financed through the NSRP at the rate of 85%. Contractor Rohde & Schwarz’s 495 VHF transceivers will be fully installed by the end of 2026.
