finally a decent ARM PC?

We received the Asus Vivobook S15 running the Snapdragon X Elite. Before the full test, here is a first overview of performance and autonomy.

For 9 months, Qualcomm has been trying to get on the ball of PC chipmakers, it’s finally time to test the first PC equipped with Snapdragon X Elite. This will be the Asus Vivobook S15, for which we will publish a full review soon.

Before that, we bring you a first review to compare the performance of this new generation with the existing PC. The full test will allow us to return in detail to this new generation, which combines the capabilities of Windows Copilot+ and the promises of the ARM architecture, especially on the autonomy front.

X Elite ok but the least powerful

Before we look at the benchmarks measured by 01Lab, let’s note that the PC we’re testing is equipped with the least powerful version of the four available, the Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100.

The difference is this: although it has 12 cores clocked at 3.4 GHz, it ignores the possibility of increasing two cores to 4; 4.2 or 4.3 GHz. The advantage is obviously a lower entry fee for the machine that is equipped with it.

So let’s look at the metrics. Please note that these were done before the June 18 update. Of course, we’ll update them for our full test if we see any noticeable changes.

In Geekbench 6, the Snapdragon X Elite is unsurprisingly behind the Intel Core i9-14900HX, in both single-core and multi-core mode. But the difference compared to the i9, as a reminder, the top of the range from Intel, is not so embarrassing.

Faced with a MacBook Air, the story isn’t quite the same. We measured a result well behind on single-core, but ahead on multi-core. Half a victory when we know that the Apple M3 integrates 8 cores, compared to 12 cores for the Snapdragon X Elite. Therefore, being able to surpass him when he uses his whole heart is no mean feat, but the difference is not significant.

In gaming, the computer is not made for gaming

For scientific purposes, we also decided to run the Asus Vivobook S15 on some in-game benchmarks. We remind you that these games should not run on ARM architecture, but on X86. So Snapdragon It is somewhat the same principle as Proton in Steam Deck (Windows to Linux but remains in X86) or Rosetta (Windows to MacOS + X86 to ARM).

The Snapdragon X Elite doesn’t integrate a dedicated GPU like a gaming PC can, but it does have an integrated GPU, the Adreno X1.

As a result, after all of this has been run through the Prisme mill, we’re far from a gaming PC. And never mind, the Asus Vivobook S15 isn’t aimed at that market. Snapdragon Rise of the Tomb Raider, at 720p, ran at 46.9 FPS, enough to hopefully play without much stutter but with hungry definition.

Autonomy: the best behind the Macbook Pro

We also conducted the universal autonomy test. The Asus Vivobook S15 is downright impressive. It has the best score for a Windows PC and even has the luxury of beating the 15-inch MacBook Air M3.

Our best Windows PC autonomy score so far was tested by the 14:07 Vivobook S15, which dominates the 15-inch MacBook Air M3 and its 14 hours 14. On the other hand, the thicker MacBook Pro, whether the M1 or M2, go well ahead.
